Raw Hair vs. Virgin Hair
Raw Hair vs. Virgin Hair
Raw and Virgin hair are both 100% human hair, but they're not the same thing. The difference comes down to how many donors the hair is collected from, and how much (if anything) is done to it before it reaches you. Here's what to know before you choose.
At a glance
| Raw Hair | Virgin Hair | |
|---|---|---|
| Donors | One or a small number of donors | Usually several donors |
| Processing | None, exactly as it grew | Gently processed for a consistent, sleek finish |
| Texture | The donor's natural texture | Gently processed for a smooth, consistent texture |
| Cuticle | Intact, all running root to tip | Aligned, then smoothed during processing |
| Colour & heat | Takes dye and heat predictably | May resist colour until washed a few times |
| Consistency | Varies bundle to bundle | Very consistent |
| Lifespan | Several years with good care | Shorter |
| Price | Higher | More accessible |

Is Raw hair single-donor?
Sometimes, but true single-donor bundles are rare — it's uncommon to find one person with hair long enough, and in enough supply, to make a full bundle. Most Raw bundles combine hair from a small number of donors. What makes it Raw is that the hair is collected so every cuticle runs in the same direction, root to tip, and nothing is done to it afterwards. Combining a few donors isn't a step down in quality.
Why is Raw Vietnamese hair only Natural Straight?
Vietnamese hair grows naturally straight, and Raw hair is sold exactly as it grew. Body Wave and curly textures don't occur naturally on Vietnamese donors — any hair with those textures has been permed or chemically processed, so it can't be Raw. "Bone straight" is also a processed finish rather than a natural texture.
Why does each Raw bundle look slightly different?
No two Raw bundles are the same. Because Raw hair isn't processed to a uniform standard, one donor's hair might hold a curl, take colour or shed slightly differently to another's. That natural variation is a sign of genuine unprocessed hair, not a fault.
My hair is tangling. Is that normal?
Some tangling is normal with Raw hair. Because it's completely unprocessed, it keeps the natural characteristics of the donor's own hair, including how it behaves day to day. Processed hair is coated to stay smooth, but without that treatment a little tangling is unavoidable, just as it would be with your own hair.
To keep it to a minimum, detangle gently from the ends upwards with a wide-tooth comb, use a lightweight leave-in conditioner, never sleep on wet hair, and wrap it in silk or satin at night. See our Hair Care guide for a full routine.
Why is Raw hair more expensive?
Hair long and healthy enough to sell completely untreated is harder to find, and nothing is done to disguise variation between donors, so every bundle has to genuinely hold up on its own. That costs more to source than hair processed to a uniform standard, and it's a big part of why Raw hair lasts so much longer.
Can I colour or bleach my extensions?
Yes, both Raw and Virgin can be coloured. Use a licensed colourist experienced with extensions and do a strand test first. Lightening softens a wave pattern over time, so add extra hydration and ease off heat afterwards. Raw takes dye more predictably; Virgin may resist colour until it's been washed a few times.
How do heat and humidity affect Raw hair?
Raw hair hasn't been processed to hold a fixed shape, so it responds to moisture like your own hair — humid weather can soften it or bring out a natural wave. A lightweight leave-in or serum, gentle heat and a silk or satin wrap at night keep it looking its best. Virgin hair holds its finish more predictably day to day.
Please note: in warm or humid weather, hair resting against your back or neck can mix with sweat and tangle more easily, especially at the nape and ends. Comb it through gently a few times a day, and if your hair is longer, tie it back in a loose braid or low ponytail when you're hot or active.
Should I wash Raw hair before wearing it?
Many people give Raw hair an initial wash before first wear, as it arrives completely untreated. See our Hair Care guide for a full routine.
What do grades like "10A" mean?
Very little, in practice. Grading letters aren't standardised across the industry, so one supplier's "10A" can be very different from another's. A more useful guide is how the hair is drawn: Super Drawn or Super Double Drawn bundles have had shorter strands removed, so they stay full from root to tip. If you're ever unsure, ask us about our sourcing and we'll tell you straight.
Neither is better than the other — both are 100% human hair. It simply comes down to your budget, how long you want it to last and how often you like to change your look.
